The 8 Parts of Speech
Before you can master complex grammar rules, you need to understand the building blocks of the English language. Review the cards below, then test your skills in the arena!
Noun 🏷️
A naming word. It names a person, place, thing, or idea.
Example: The dog barked at the postman in the street.
Pronoun 👉
A word used in place of a noun to avoid repetition.
Example: Mary is tired, so she went to sleep.
Verb 🏃♂️
An action word or state of being. The engine of the sentence.
Example: He ran fast and is now tired.
Adjective 🎨
A describing word. It gives more detail about a noun or pronoun.
Example: The tall man drove a blue car.
Adverb ⚡
Describes a verb, an adjective, or another adverb. Often ends in -ly.
Example: She sang beautifully and very loudly.
Preposition 📍
Shows the relationship of a noun/pronoun to another word (location, time).
Example: The cat hid under the bed during the storm.
Conjunction 🔗
A joining word. It connects words, phrases, or clauses.
Example: I like tea, but I don’t like coffee.
Interjection 😲
A word expressing sudden or strong emotion. Usually followed by an exclamation mark.
Example: Wow! That is a beautiful painting. Ouch!
