What is a Diary Entry?
A completely personal piece of writing where you express your genuine feelings, thoughts, and reactions to a specific event.
1. The Top-Left Rule π
Day & Date
Always start your diary entry at the absolute top left corner of the page.
Write the Day followed by the expanded Date.
Example: Wednesday, 15 March 2026
The Time
On the very next line, write the time.
Pro Tip: Because a diary is a reflection of the day’s events, it is usually written at night before sleeping.
Example: 9:30 PM
2. Tone & Salutation π£οΈ
Leave a blank line after the time.
Always begin with the classic salutation: Dear Diary,
The Tone: This is not a formal letter to the Principal! The tone must be highly informal, personal, and emotional.
Write as if you are whispering your deepest secrets to your absolute best friend.
3. The Point of View
” I “
The First Person
Make it Personal
Because a diary is your personal account of an event, you must always write in the First Person.
Always use pronouns like I, my, me, we, and us. Never write about yourself in the third person.
4. The Tense Time Machine β³
Simple Past
Use the Past Tense to describe the main events or incidents that happened earlier during the day.
Present Tense
Use the Present Tense to describe how you are feeling right now as you sit and write the diary.
Future Tense
Use the Future Tense at the very end to express your hopes, fears, or plans for tomorrow.
