Quick Revision Notes

Origins & Meaning: Yoga is a physical, mental, and spiritual practice that originated in ancient India. The word ‘Yoga’ comes from the Sanskrit root ‘yuj’, which means ‘to join’ or ‘to unite’. It symbolizes the harmony between the mind and body, and between human and nature.

Sage Patanjali: He presented the ancient tradition of yoga in a systematic way in his book, the ‘Yoga Sutras of Patanjali’. He described yoga as a means to make the mind quiet and free from distractions.

Physical & Mental Benefits: Yoga postures (asanas) increase flexibility, endurance, and balance, while reducing body pain. Meanwhile, breathing techniques and meditation calm the mind, reduce stress and anxiety, improve sleep, and increase concentration.

Overall Health: Yoga boosts the immune system, aids in weight loss, and improves heart health by lowering blood pressure and improving circulation.

Global Recognition & Practice: Because of its immense benefits, the World Health Organisation (WHO) launched the WHO mYoga App on June 20, 2021, to provide a free tool to teach yoga globally. To truly practice yoga, one must coordinate stretches with breath and awareness, keeping the mind completely focused on the body without distractions.
