1. Neem Baba

Unit 3: Nurturing Nature | Poorvi

Quick Revision Notes

Characters: Amber (a young schoolgirl) and Neem Baba (the wise, talking Neem tree in her courtyard).

Origins & Names: The neem tree was born millions of years ago in North India or Myanmar. It is known by many names: Arishta (curer of diseases), Nimba, and ‘Neem’ (a name given by Iranians). Scientists highly respect it, calling it the “magic tree” and “nature’s gift to man.”

Medicinal Uses: Neem leaves, bark, flowers, and roots contain chemical properties that destroy germs. They give comfort during diseases like measles and can cure coughs and itchy eyes. However, Neem Baba warns that medicines should only be made by well-trained, experienced people.

Agricultural Uses: For farmers, neem is incredibly helpful. Neem seed powder mixed with water stops locusts from eating plants, prevents mosquitoes from breeding in stagnant water (like in rice fields), and saves crops from termites.

Everyday Uses: Neem seed powder protects stored grains from insects. Neem oil is used in soaps and toothpaste. Additionally, furniture made from neem wood is never eaten by termites, and the tree naturally purifies the air around it.
