3. Rama to the Rescue

Unit 1: Fables and Folk Tales | Poorvi

Quick Revision Notes

The Setting: A quiet night in a small village. A man and his wife hear a faint scratching and digging sound and soon realize a thief is trying to break into their house.

The Problem: The couple knows they cannot physically fight the thief themselves, so they need a way to call for help without alarming the intruder to run away or attack them.

The Clever Plan: Instead of panicking, the husband starts a loud, fake conversation with his wife about naming their future child. He suggests the name “Rama” and begins shouting it loudly, over and over.

The Trick: The thief assumes the man is just excitedly repeating a baby name for fun. However, “Rama” is actually the name of the village kotwal (guard) who is responsible for law and order.

The Rescue: The kotwal hears his name being shouted in the silent night, realizes someone is calling for help, and rushes to the house. He catches the thief before he can escape.

The Moral: The village admires the man’s intelligence. The story teaches that quick thinking, presence of mind, and staying calm are much more powerful tools in dangerous situations than reacting with fear.
