Unit 3: Nurturing Nature | Poorvi

Quick Revision Notes

The Context: A letter written by a grandmother (Daadi) to her grandchildren, Vikram and Vaibhavi, sharing traditional home remedies using common kitchen spices that she learned from her own grandmother.

Digestion & Stomach Health: Many spices help with digestion. Jeera (cumin) soaked overnight improves digestion and cures sleeplessness. Heeng (asafoetida) relieves gas in babies’ tummies. Kali mirch (black pepper), saunf (fennel), and ajwain (carom seeds) are excellent for digestion, which is why the latter two are served after meals.

Coughs, Colds & Breathing: Adrak (ginger), which has been used in cooking for over 4000 years, and heeng are great for controlling coughs and colds. Elaichi (cardamom) helps with respiratory troubles and cures bad breath.

Pain Relief & General Health: Haldi (turmeric) improves energy and reduces body pain. Dalchini (cinnamon) and laung (clove) provide temporary relief for toothaches. Methi (fenugreek) soaked overnight controls sugar levels and body weight.

Important Advice: Daadi warns that children must always consult an elder before trying to use these herbs and spices as remedies.
