Quick Revision Notes
👧 Meet Jahnavi: The Girl with a Million Questions
Jahnavi is an inquisitive ten-year-old girl with a brilliant mind. While her older brother Gopi (whom she calls ‘Ettan’) and her sister Meena go to school, Jahnavi is forced to stay home. Her daily chore? Babysitting her youngest brother, little Appu. But Jahnavi’s mind is full of questions: Why are spiders yellow in yellow flowers? Why do bamboo trees rustle? Where does the moon go?
🌊 The Secret Friend
Feeling lonely and sad about missing out on education, Jahnavi goes to the riverbank and starts crying. Suddenly, she hears a sleepy, murmuring voice. It isn’t a lizard, a kingfisher, or a parrot. To her utter shock, the River is talking to her! The River listens to her problems and tells her a secret: “Little girls can do as much as little boys.”
🏫 The Brave Leap
The River challenges Jahnavi to be brave. If she isn’t afraid of snakes in the bamboo clumps or loud trains rattling past, why should she be afraid of a school? Gathering all her courage, Jahnavi sneaks into the school the very next day with little Appu asleep on her shoulder. She squats in the back row, listening intently to a story about King Ashoka.
🏆 The Victory & The Big Dream
The teacher spots her, but instead of chasing her out, the teacher is impressed by her curiosity. The teacher visits Jahnavi’s father, and finally, Jahnavi gets permission to attend school! Her mother even admits she wished she had gone to school too.
The Ultimate Goal: Jahnavi runs back to the river to share her victory. She declares that when she grows up, she won’t just keep the knowledge to herself. She wants to become a teacher and go from house to house, ensuring every little girl in her village gets to go to school.
