2. The Winner

Unit 4: Sports and Wellness | Poorvi

Quick Revision Notes

The Setting: A group of children playing a ball game in the evenings, next to a creek in their neighbour’s field.

The Action & Poetic Structure: The children play with so much energy that they run until they are completely out of breath. The poet writes the words “I / can’t / even / catch / my / breath” on separate, descending lines. This clever formatting makes the reader pause between words, imitating the feeling of panting heavily after a long run.

The Transition: As the day ends, the “blue dark” of dusk turns into the complete black of night. The temperature drops, making the “cold grass ache” the children’s bare feet. In the darkness, the shadows make it look like the trees are creeping closer to them.

The “Winner”: The children don’t end the game because one team scored more points. The game is over because it becomes too dark and cold to see or play. Therefore, Nature is personified as the ultimate victor—”Night wins!”
