Vitamin-M
by Asha Nehemiah
The Big Picture
Prose Overview & Core Themes
“Vitamin-M” by Asha Nehemiah is a humorous and touching story about the shifting dynamics within a family when a 75-year-old Grandpa moves in. Ravi’s mother, Vidya, constantly worries about Grandpa’s failing health and recent bouts of forgetfulness.
Exasperated by his slip-ups, she wishes for a magical memory pill she dubs “Vitamin-M” for the elderly. She even tasks her young son, Ravi, who fancies himself an undercover detective, to keep a close watch on the seemingly frail old man. However, the story playfully subverts our expectations of old age.
Grandpa, a fiercely independent former lawyer, is much sharper than his family realizes. In a brilliant climax on his own birthday—a date Vidya completely forgot despite marking her calendar—Grandpa outwits everyone. He hands Vidya some metaphorical “Vitamin-M” and gives Ravi a detective manual, proving he knew he was being tailed all along.
