2. What a Bird Thought
Unit 3: Nurturing Nature | Poorvi
Quick Revision Notes
The Theme: The poem is a beautiful metaphor about growing up. Just like humans, the bird’s understanding of the world expands as it grows older and explores more of its surroundings.
Stage 1 (The Egg): The bird’s first home is “small and round.” It thinks the entire world is made of a “pale, blue shell.” It is safe but its view is very limited.
Stage 2 (The Nest): After hatching, the bird lives in a nest made of straw. While being comfortably “nestled by its mother,” it now believes the entire world is made only of straw.
Stage 3 (The Tree): The bird grows stronger and “flutters” to the edge of the nest. It sees the leaves of the tree and admits it was “blind” before. It now thinks the world is made of leaves.
Stage 4 (The Wide World): Finally, the bird is fully grown (“fit for grown-up labours”) and flies beyond the tree. Experiencing the vastness of the sky, the bird realizes the world is too huge and complex to simply explain, admitting that neither it nor its neighbours truly know how the world is made.
