CBSE Letter to the Editor: Format, Examples & Builder

Letter to the Editor

A formal letter written to the Editor of a newspaper to highlight a social issue or express an opinion. Master the official CBSE layout, test your knowledge, and practice writing below!

1. The 3-Step Header 📍

Always follow this exact order at the top-left: 1. Sender’s Address (2 lines) ➔ Leave a line ➔ 2. Date (Alphanumeric) ➔ Leave a line ➔ 3. Receiver’s Address (The Editor, Newspaper Name, City).

2. Subject & Salutation 📌

Write a brief Subject that summarizes the issue in 4-6 words. Underline it. Leave a line, then write the Salutation: Sir / Madam, (Never use ‘Dear’ in a formal letter).

3. The 3-Paragraph Body 📝

Para 1: Introduce the problem using the classic opening line.
Para 2: Discuss the causes and effects of the problem in detail.
Para 3: Provide suggestions and appeal to the authorities to take action.

4. The Golden Rule ⚠️

Never ask the Editor to solve the problem! The Editor is a journalist, not a police officer or mayor. Ask them to publish your letter so the concerned authorities wake up and take action.

Subject: Nuisance caused by loudspeakers during exam times Subject (Underlined)
Sir/Madam, Salutation
Through the columns of your esteemed newspaper, I would like to draw the attention of the concerned authorities towards the growing nuisance of loudspeakers in our area. Para 1: Classic Opening
Currently, students are preparing for their board examinations. However, the continuous blaring of loudspeakers from nearby event halls till late at night makes it impossible for students to concentrate. Furthermore, it disturbs the elderly and the sick who require rest. Para 2: Causes & Effects
It is high time that the authorities enforce strict noise pollution laws and ban the use of loudspeakers after 10 PM. I hope my letter finds a place in your newspaper so that the administration wakes up from its slumber and takes immediate action. Para 3: Suggestions & Conclusion
Yours truly, Sign-off
